Competency –based language teaching

Foreign language teachers face different constraints today at the time to make language learning and teaching more effective, thus it is important to look for strategies that makes us as teachers be aware of our process and eventually have better outcomes in this process.

Competency-based language teaching views the language as a way to make language learning and teaching more effective since it goes beyond the common methods applied in classrooms since long time, this is, it focuses on the outcomes students might produce taking into account the skills students have, also it aims to enhance these abilities to make students be aware of them and apply them to real life situations ,therefore students reach competencies to participate and to perform effectively in situations that occur outside the classroom, hence the difference with previous approaches or methods used in the past , methods that focused on the acquisition of knowledge without any functional intention.

CBLT do not focus on subject knowledge or the specific grades students might obtain, but the skills he/she would need to perform appropriately in the society, then the assessment is not concerned with those scales most teachers are used to, the assessment should be directed to exploit the different abilities each learners remain to make him more competent in the language.
